The neighbourhood

Buonconvento is simply a hidden treasure where authentic Italian life still exists and yet is easy to reach more famous touristy towns and villages. Unlike many villages and towns Buonconvento is a real working village where locals live 12 months a year. This was all important to us when choosing a place to purchase in Tuscany. Yet Buonconvento is pretty and attractive at the same time, recognised as one of the most prettiest bongo’s in the whole of Italy. As well as the usual festival’s and Bank holiday Buonconvento comes to life throughout the year. For example, February is carnival time here, in May The Eroica cycle race passes through the village as does the Mille Miglia classic car race. In mid to late September the Sagra festival happens where the locals line the streets and enjoy food and wine from the different quarters of the village. Here you can mix freely with the welcoming locals where the welcome is warm and the prices are reasonable. As well as a supermarket you can still shop in an old fashioned Italian way. The weekly market selling fresh produce from fish and meat to cheese, bread, fruit and vegetables takes place every saturday morning throughout the year. You can purchase fresh bread daily from our favourite artisan baker and coffee shop, call into see Sergio and Rosy at Tutti Fruitti fruit and Vegetable grocery store which has served the community for years or pick up your weekly joint at the local butchers who will be happy to advise you the best method and cooking time to enjoy your meat. Plus many grocery stores in the village are available selling everything from home made pasta to local cheese and sauces. Piangiani hand made leather bags and shoes is located in the middle of the village and always popular with guests to pick up a gift of artisan Italian leather. Buonconvento really does give you an authentic slice of life from a by gone area where friends and family feel a lot better for living the experience. The village is served by a the train and buses taking you to Siena and beyond or down to Rome, please ask for details.

Reviews

We had a great stay at Cortile del Pozzo.
Following the doom & gloom of the lockdown, we needed to get a break in a somewhat remote, but well located (close to interesting sites) place that would be spacious, well furnished and, preferably, with a big garden to relax in and a swimming pool to chill, but large enough to get some exercise.
This property proved to be just that and much more. We spent 11 nights in a luxurious, large Tuscan house close to Buonconvento (nice little town with good restaurants, shops, etc.) and Montalcino (and it’s fantastic surrounding wineries!).
Barrie & Julie are fantastic hosts – very responsive and providing excellent recommendations, not to mention that on arrival a few bottles of Montalcino were waiting for us 🙂
We toured Tuscan towns and the countryside during and loved every bit of it.
Can recommend this property wholeheartedly!

We had the good fortune to spend some time in Tuscany and staying in this property can only add to the pleasure. The house has this lovely serene feeling to it, all calm and relaxing. It invites you to sit down and relax, with a glass of wine in your hand, and just admire the view all the way across to Montalcino.
The property is lovely and modern, built in a light coloured stone. The lounge is beautifully furnished and the bedrooms are simple and elegant but lovely and cool after a hot day in the sun. Nice modern showers and the kitchen would delight any chef.
Beautiful pool and beautiful views everywhere.
Ideally placed for exploring Siena and all the local villages. Buonconvento, the closest village, is absolutely charming.
Julie and Barrie go above and beyond to make sure you have the perfect stay, and their recommendations about places to visit, restaurants to eat in, wine to drink etc. are all top.

Top class property. Spacious , modern, nice tile , amazing bathrooms and showers with good furniture. The outside has a nice dining area, which is ideal to see the sun set with top class Tuscany wine and nice Italian dishes. Nice amenities with an amazing pool with nice view of Montalcino and the traditional Tuscan cypress. Impressed with an above and beyond service by the hosts! A must to stay in this property while in Tuscany.

My wife & I have been privileged to enjoy 2 stays @ this country idyll. After a long journey from Australia to be greeted by the owners warmly & with a welcome drink set our stay up. Barrie & Julie are great hosts, attentive & very genuine. The property is exactly as described, the rooms are terrific, the sense of space & furnishings provide a perfect place to relax. All of this is complemented with a lovely outdoor dining & relaxing area & a sense of tranquility. We have no hesitation in recommending the property, location & most importantly the owners for a perfect stay in Italy

A great Tuscan experience. The property is situated in a beautiful location, is very well appointed, spacious and comfortable with air conditioning should temperatures be high. The hosts are exceptionally helpful, provided lots of useful information and went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful holiday.

We stayed here en famille (5 adults and 2 children) in July 2022 after a wedding in Pienza; we know Tuscany well and have stayed in the area a few times. We loved the property, which has been beautifully modernised. There is a nice little garden, (a huge shared pool as well, which never seemed to get busy), and a glorious patio for dining in the evening (or reading a book in a comfortable chair). The location is a few km out of Buenconvento, so it is very peaceful. You’ll need a car; there is plenty in the surrounding towns to keep you busy and plenty of restaurants to choose from, should you wish to, with Montalcino, Torrenieri (La Compagnia – simple but very good pizza restaurant), San Quirico d’Orcia (Ristorante Trattoria Osenna – wonderful meat restaurant), Bagno Vignoni (for ice creams and / or coffee) and of course Buenconvento on the doorstep, to name but a few. I had asked Barry to select some bottles for us prior to our arrival – what he found for us was wonderful. We had a very relaxing and refreshing holiday here, and we’re happy to recommend both the property and the hosts, Barry and Julie, as well as Emma (who greeted us and was always available if needed).

“Hi Julie and Barrie,
I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our stay in your lovely house. It’s a very special place and we’re bringing some lovely memories home with us. Thanks for all the advice and recommendations and for being so responsive to any queries. Thanks to Emma too who gave us such a warm welcome 😊. Hope to revisit again one day but in the meantime will be trying to find a wine to match that lovely rose you sourced for us! All the best and hope you enjoy the rest of the summer “

“We had a great week in your beautiful villa. We loved the property, the setting and the surrounding area. I know Julie was messaging Jon at the beginning with some suggestions which we didn’t have the opportunity to follow up on this occasion as we were meeting up with family located in different parts of the region. Anyway, another time we would love to take advantage of your knowledge of the area. Thank you also for purchasing the wine, it was all amazing.
Have a great summer, and thanks again for letting us stay”

We had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed your beautiful home. I know you put a lot of effort into sharing nuggets with your guests that will help them have the most authentic experience – I can’t tell you how much we appreciate that! Your thoughtfulness and help were unlike anything we’ve seen in renting (the wine, the day trip suggestions, the restaurant arrangements, the bocce balls, and on and on…). We had wonderful day trips to Orvieto, Sienna, Florence, biking in Chianti, etc., We visited Casale di Bibbiano on our last day, but only wish we had done that earlier in the week so that we could have taken a cooking class there!

We spent a wonderful family holiday in a charming villa Cortile del Pozzo surrounded by beautiful Tuscany. The attentiveness and helpfulness of our host couple Barrie and Julie even before our arrival, and the care of our hostess Emma on the spot, warmed our minds and completed the success of our holiday perfectly! I can happily recommend this to anyone who needs a quiet and comfortable place to spend their holiday 🙂

A lovely, easy-going place to stay with its big lofty rooms, especially the living area, and a large, well-equipped kitchen. Also makes a great base for exploring this stunning region

We have spent one week with my family in this lovely and comfortable house at the beginning of September. As soon as we walked into the home were were very impressed with the spacious living area which opens into the garden and the charming typical Tuscan furnishings and finishings. The terracotta floors and yhe beamed ceilings make this house so cozy! Of course we stayed in early September the temperature was still warm but the idea of spending an evening to relax in front of that great fireplace, drinking a nice glass of Brunello di Montalcino, was like a dream!

The kitchen is really what we call in Italy “cucina abitabile” with lots of space and easy access to reach the garden from here

The outside space is really well maintained and there are many well equipped areas for privacy which we appreciated with ample table and chairs plus sunbeds, so much so that you can choose a different space to enjoy each day!

My children of course really enjoyed the pool area! The infinity pool is huge as well as the grassy area surrounding it, prefect for my children to play. They also enjoyed playing tennis at the court close to the pool.

The home is located in an idyllic situation for people looking to relax in complete peace surrounded by beautiful trees. Yet in just few minutes driving we could easily reach the pretty village of Buonconvento which has an excellent selection of restaurant and wine bars with little shops, market etc like a village that time had forget but was all the better for it. We loved our trip to Siena which only took 30 minutes from the home as well as to Montalcino in 15 minutes only. We observed an amazing numbers of grapes on the way to there from the vineyards and marvelled at the incredible landscape!!!

Follonica, only 80 minutes by car was perfect for our children enjoyed the beaches as well! To sum up all I can say it is impossible to describe the home and area of Tuscany. Its easier to go there and enjoy! I really recommend this holiday for guests looking for an authentic and unspoilt tuscan adventure. We hope to return very soon!

A special thanks to Julie and Barrie. They were fantastic hosts sending us lots of useful information and tips with favourite restaurants, wine bars, places to visit gathered from their stays here these past 19 years I understand! It was easy to explore the area with the all the information available so we could unpack, relax and discover the area with all the local knowledge to hand rather than waiting to the last few days of our holiday to discover it for ourselves. This was invaluable to us! Thanks again and see you soon!
